HE PRACTICE OF LAW, EITHER IN A LAW FIRM or a corporate in-house law department, is very dif- ferent now than it was some 23 years ago when I got started. Since then, there has been tremendous change in the tools that we use and increased pres-


sure on attorneys to add value to their clients. With never-ending challenges brought about by these


changes there are two fundamental character traits that are necessary to be competitive: a strong work ethic and pas- sion for the law. However, these characteristics are just the baseline of what you need to stay in the game. In order to really stand out, there are three other skills that, if properly developed, will set you apart from your peers.


T ey are what I refer to as CSI: 1. Collaboration to drive effi ciency by working


successfully with others and leveraging each others’ strengths. 2. Sensitivity to diverse thoughts and being open to


diff erent perspectives, which can make a signifi cant diff er- ence in solving problems eff ectively. 3. Innovation to provide better, faster and more


accurate service to your clients. If you can keep these career skills in mind (strong work


ethic and passion combined with CSI), your rise to the top of the legal profession will be just a matter of time.
