SEND reforms: are you ready?
To date, through the Achievement for All
Schools Programme, the charity has reached 1.2 million pupils in more than 2,000 schools across England. Outcomes in reading, writing and maths have been signifi cant, with many of those on the programme making 50% bet er progress than the national expectations for all pupils. The approach adopted for the reforms
laid out in the Code of Practice chapter on schools has been drawn from the impact and experience of the Achievement for All Schools Programme. The charity has a proven track record
of working with thousands of school leaders, teachers and wider professionals to successfully engage with parents, carers and pupils. The Department for Education has selected

t a small village school in Normanton on Soar, a child was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and
had fallen far behind in his learning. Every eff ort was being made to support
the child in their learning, as headteacher Justine Roberts explained: “We tried to get him to at end an after-school club but he was very reluctant. We explored this with dad during one of the structured conversations. It turned out that his son was a very keen gardener. So we set up a gardening club. We transformed the top of the school fi eld into a garden and the child played a pivotal role in establishing it. He was an inspiration to other children.” Through this activity, the child began to move ahead, socially, emotionally, and academically. His progress was described by the school as exceptional and by the time he left he was within national expectations for at ainment. His Dad contacted his son’s teachers to tell them his son has taken everything he learned on with him to his new school and is doing really well. From September all schools, academies,
Pupile Referral Units (PRUs), local authorities and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs)
will need to implement the revised Special Educational Needs and/or Disability (SEND) Code of Practice. At the heart of the changes is the
requirement to involve parents and carers, young people and children in shaping the provision of SEND services. Achievement for All, the country’s
