Wise up kids! Your digital foot print is forever says Ntegra CEO Andy Davies
O
ur young people today are fully engaged in a digital lifestyle that can be somewhat alien to many members of older
generations. This digital engagement ranges from social interactions with friends and family, collaboration in their learning career with teachers and fellow students, gaming both solo and online, through to communications with the whole world and complete strangers.
How often do you consider the longevity
of an email, tweet or Facebook update? In the age of instant communication, it is surprising to many that your email to your sister, for example, may be stored for many years on many different servers, in many different countries. Surely this should be of no consequence
to a law-abiding citizen? How about if in the said email you put that you ‘hated’ your sister and wished she was dead? Possibly not an uncommon momentary
thought amongst siblings. However, years later, that same sister might be subject to an unfortunate incident and your long forgoten email could become evidence against you. Whether anybody likes it or not, young people are fully engaged in the digital age. Whilst some might argue that technology is not required in the education of young people, many believe it is essential. Good ICT and immersive digital engagement supports teachers to teach without constraint. It inspires and challenges students to be the best they can be. In short, great ICT facilitates unrestrained learning. ICT within the school environment needs to be monitored and controlled to some extent to protect the school and their students. However, it is vital to educate young people and their parents in the pitfalls and risks that are present in order to enjoy fully a lifelong digital existence.
