aged 50 or over (in my case well over by some distance) that the Spanish Open had been won by Miguel Angel Jimenez at the age of 50 years and 133 days, to make him the European Tour’s first winner over the age of 50. What is the secret of his success?

According to the great man himself it is “Good food, good wine, good cigars and some exercise!” I whole- heartedly agree with the first three, but I’m not too sure about the exercise! However, of course, it goes deeper than that, and I think former Open champion Tom Lehman recently hit the nail on the head when he said of Jimenez that “He plays the game the way we all want to play. He has fun. That’s the key to a long career. A big part of why Miguel is still so good is that he carries over his philosophy of living into his game.” Long may that continue! Lucy Li, an 11 year old American

golfer, also made history earlier this month, by winning a sectional qualifying tournament in California to earn a spot in the upcoming U.S. Women’s Open, which made her the tournament’s youngest ever qualifier. Not everyone is celebrating Lucy’s

achievements though, as there are concerns about the state of women’s golf in the USA that someone so young could make the field in one of America’s most prestigious tournaments. However, modern day technology and lightweight clubs have helped to compensate for a

natural lack of strength in the 11 year old. Mind you, compared to Tiger

Woods, Lucy Li is a late starter as Woods first broke 80 as an eight year old, and then broke 70 on a regulation golf course when he was just 12! And on the subject of Tiger Woods, I see that Aussie Adam Scott has usurped Woods to become golf's new world number one, ending a 14- month spell at the top for the American. Woods continues to recover from back surgery, but having had the same ‘op’ as him some time ago there must be a very real chance of Tiger missing both the US Open next month and the British Open at Hoylake in July. Now that would be a great shame. Finally, good luck to Sheffield’s Matt

Fitzpatrick who has announced that he will be turning professional after the US Open to end his outstanding career as an amateur golfer. Aged just 19, Fitzpatrick, the reigning US Amateur champion and Open Championship silver medallist, became the first Englishman for over 100 years to win the US Amateur title at Brookline last year, and the young man looks certain to continue that success as a professional. Remember the name as he is definitely one to watch.
