PAGE 47 / ZUGZWANG

Reshevsky-Sunye Neto. Reshevsky comes up with an elegant idea that culminates in a study-like Zugzwang: 61. Ke8 Ke6 62. Kd8 Kd6 63. Kc8 Kc6 Black’s king cannot depart the sixth rank: in the event of 63. ... Kd5, White promotes first after 64. Kd7 Ke4 65. Kc6 Kd3 66. d5 Kxc3 67. d6 Kb2 68. d7 and Black is one move too late. 64. Kb8! Kb6 65. d5!, Black resigned.

Benko-Damjanovic. Neither 49. Kb5 Kc7 50. Ka5? Kc6 51. Ka4 b6 nor 49. Ka5? Kc6 make any progress. Once again, victory can only be achieved by placing Black in Zugzwang, and using the triangulation method (i.e. deliber- ately losing a tempo). 49. Kb4! Kd8 Black’s king cannot hold his own after 49. ... Kc6 50. Ka5. 50. Ka5! The rash 50. Kb5? Kc7 would have forced White to start all over again with 51. Ka4. 50. ... Kd7 Black is in Zugzwang after 50. ... Kc7 51. Kb5. 51. Kb6 Kc8 52. c6 Kb8! One last trick: 53. cxb7?? leads to a draw after 53. ... f4! 54. exf4, with a stalemate. However, Benko has seen one step ahead: 53. Kc5!, Black resigned. Black cannot stop White’s king from penetrating to d6.
