Updates from the 2014 Europe

Interchange Sheila Leaman, Director of Global CDISC Relations I was privileged to sit in on the two-day CDISC Board of Directors meeting on Monday and Tuesday of the 2014 CDISC Europe Interchange. What a group of engaged and totally committed professionals! Our Board members spent a lot of time reviewing what has been accomplished, but more importantly they discussed what the goals for CDISC should be for the next few years. The Board’s direction and commitment is that CDISC keep true to its vision of Informing patient care and safety through higher quality medical research.

Additionally, implementing online registration in August 2011 has increased CDISC private (on-site) courses significantly. Since then, over 200 requests for private course training have poured in from countries all over Europe and Asia, the US and Canada. The trend seems to be as soon as more stringent wording is put into healthcare laws around the globe—via regulatory agencies understanding the need and importance of standards—the more in demand CDISC courses become.

In addition, CDISC has seen a steady increase in public course offerings. We now offer multiple courses at public training events that take place on a monthly basis. These public courses occur throughout the US in cities like Cambridge, Raleigh, San Francisco, and Seattle. We also provide CDISC courses yearly in such cities as Brussels, Copenhagen, Tokyo, Shanghai , and Bei j ing to accommodate our global members.

We are happy to announce CDISC has released our first online training course: SDTM, allowing members to access on demand learning 24/7 from anywhere in the world. The CDASH online course will be available at the end of Q2. These online courses will provide an opportunity to all individuals around the globe working in medical research to enhance their CDISC skills.

Upcoming opportunities for CDISC public training include courses in Cambridge, MA in May and in San Francisco, CA in June. We will also offer CDASH and SDTM courses in Tokyo, Japan this May.

On Tuesday evening, the CDISC Advisory Council (CAC), which is composed of representatives from our CDISC Platinum Membership, had a special Face-to-Face town hall Q&A meeting with the CDISC Board, as well as two special FDA guests. It was followed by the CAC business meeting, where one of the hot topics was finding ways to fund CDISC SHARE, our metadata repository. The encouraging part of the discussion was that members of the CAC were taking the lead on identifying solutions to fund and maintain this much awaited tool which will be greatly beneficial to all users. This active engagement is what makes CDISC work, and it was very rewarding to see first hand our members’ enthusiasm and support.

The two conference days were exciting and hectic. As the event was held at a conference center, the exhibitors were unable to set up their booths until just two hours before the conference commenced. I am so pleased with our exhibitors who were able to set up their booths in good spirits and speed. When all was said and done no one could tell that everything was done in such a short time. Conferences and Exhibitions such as these always have moments of panic followed by creative problem solving, and this event was not immune to them. One booth was a bit too tall. After some discussion, the backdrop was slightly slanted and business proceeded as usual, thanks to the compromise and good humor of all involved.

To drive more traffic to all exhibitors, we offered our attendees the opportunity to participate in an exhibitor bingo game. This is something we do at our North American Interchanges, but I realized that this was the first time we held this particular event for exhibitors in Europe. Again, in the spirit of real time adjustments, we made regular announcements about this opportunity during the conference. Visits to the exhibitors did increase, especially the few hours before the drawing.
