PRODUCTS MACHINE BUILDING, FRAMEWORKS & SAFETY HEAVY DUTY LEVELLING CASTORS FOR MACHINE TOOLS

With critical equipment such as machine tools it is often important that the bed is level in order to operate accurately. This, however, can be hard to achieve if the floor is uneven. To help, WDS is offering heavy duty levelling castors that are easily adjustable and even allow for quick re-positioning when required. The castors add mobility and

practicality to large machine tools and other heavy duty workshop accessories which require an

accurate, totally level horizontal surface, allowing the machine tool to be positioned accurately. Once in position, a die cast footpad with a vibration damping rubber pad is dropped to the floor via a nut or

handwheel, allowing the user to make finite adjustments to the levelling. A variety of dimensions are available, although customised solutions can be provided. The castors feature a forged steel

top plate and die cast body with a powder coated black finish, and are capable of supporting static loads up to 1,800kg.

A SCALABLE APPROACH TO MACHINE BUILDING

Enter 212 LIGHT CURTAINS WITHOUT ‘DEAD ZONES’

Multifunction light curtains are available from Pilz which can be manually- or software- configured for standard, blanking or direct muting capability. With these, the top and

bottom beams are at the very extremity of the receiver/transmitters meaning there are no dead zones, allowing the light curtains to be fitted into tighter spots. Furthermore, the curtains can be butted directly up to each other without loss of protection and can be ‘cascaded’ where greater

than 1800mm protected profile is required, without loss of protection. Electrical cascading can be carried out on up to three pairs (one master + two slaves). The new Advanced range

consists of 33 types covering Type 2 hand (30mm) and Type 4 finger (14mm) and hand (30mm) resolution, at protected heights ranging from 300mm to 1800mm, with an operating range of 0.5 to 20m. Reaction times are as fast as 11.9ms. Greater programming

flexibility is available in ACM

(advanced configuration mode) using an Ethernet interface adaptor and the free to download PSENopt Configurator. The Ethernet interface module is also intended for cloning and remote monitoring/logging. A coding function enables the light curtain to operate normally even if an interference condition occurs with another light curtain.

B+R Industrial Automation has introduced Scalability+, a new approach that enables machine builders to tailor an automation solution directly to the needs of a machine. This allows the machine builder to select a hardware and software solution that best fits requirements and if, during development, there is a need for components or solutions to be scaled up or down, this can be done without losing any of the work that has already been done. As a result, the automation solutions can be adapted without making compromises along the way.

Throughout industry all drives utilise electric motors, with a large proportion being controlled by variable speed drives connected to gearboxes and couplings. Such equipment may have been sourced from a number of suppliers. Siemens’ integrated drive system (IDS), however, is a concept which elevates products beyond pure product supply. It is an all- encompassing solution whereby the ‘complete drive system solution’ is specified and supported throughout its lifecycle. By addressing both the operational and energy efficiency

requirement of a company, this optimises a drive system to the highest degree of performance and allows complete acquisition of data to achieve predictive maintenance. Not only does it support the machine or plant throughout its entire

lifecycle, but it simplifies procurement of equipment by using a single source supply route. Having the correct tools to be able to design, simulate and justify cost savings and performance are key to

being able to realise the full potential of any industrial machinery package. The implementation of IDS allows the user to implement software that can both specify, simulate and calculate energy efficiency and performance of the drive system – which is critical to meeting the demands of the final application. To ensure ease of commissioning and construction of the drive system, IDS solutions have a seamless

approach and harmonisation of the drive train components, ensuring there is no risk of incompatibility and that commissioning time is kept to a minimum. Integration of the drive system to the machine control system and beyond can be achieved using the

latest communication protocols, allowing for increased availability, data access, flexibility and remote diagnostics, and ensuring the maximum potential is achieved. To confirm that a machine or drive system is always working at peak performance, IDS uses lifecycle

support, a method of maintaining the drive system in a planned manner, ensuring both the performance and efficiency of the drive train are not compromised. For future proofing the solution, lifecycle support can also take the responsibility of modernisation

programmes or modifications so that industry’s constantly changing demands are always met. Siemens Industry

expanded with new ranges of Compact CPU’s, available in a range of variants with different performance levels, and with onboard I/O. As with all X20 CPUs, additional I/O modules can be connected either locally or remotely using cables. Each system is equipped with 32 built-in digital and analogue I/O channels and an x86 processor as standard features. Integrated POWERLINK, standard Ethernet, CAN, RS232 and USB interfaces are also available. The company has launched two new

additions to its Power Panel HMI family: Power Panel T-Series terminals and Power Panel C-Series controllers, both of which feature touch screens. The terminal series is being offered with four TFT display sizes ranging from 4.3” to 10.1” and comes with two Ethernet interfaces, two USB ports and an extensive array of configuration options. The company also provides controllers

and visualisation products, and its new Automation Studio 4 software tool allows engineering processes to be implemented efficiently and effectively. The B&R Scalability+ approach provides

optimal support for creating modular machines with all of their variants and options. Machine builders can develop reusable function modules that can be pulled in and out of machines at the design stage. Depending upon the performance demands of the customer, hardware can be selected to produce cost effective and perfectly matched systems. This is enhanced by using open standards for real time communication between modules to produce perfectly matched control systems to minimise development time.
