Bavarian dairy products manufacturer Zott added four more machines to its in-house yoghurt packaging production unit at the end of 2013 – all El-Exis SP packaging specifi- cation machines from Sumitomo SHI Demag configured for high speed IML production. Family-owned Zott, which
traces its history back to 1926, took the decision to begin production of some of its own yoghurt pots at its plant at Mertingen in 1987. The four new Sumitomo Demag moulding machines joined 10 already installed at the company’s plant producing packaging for the Zott Sahne- Joghurt, Monte, Jogobella and Zottarella brands.
The injection moulding machines, which include several El-Exis 250-1450 models, are in production 24 hours a day using the in-mould labelling (IML) technique. Zott decided in favour of several identical Sumitomo Demag machines, all with the same features, in order to simplify the general technical condi- tions for production.

this project Sumitomo Demag supplied an El-Exis S 350-2300 capable of production on a cycle time of 4.0 seconds with an 8+8-cavity stack mould. “We chose the El-Exis due
to its low energy consumption, an aspect that is very impor- tant for us,” says Hosp. “We have also integrated the IML paper technique into the new machine.”
Depending on requirements,
“At the same time, ma- chines of the same type produce the Zott Jogole cups,” says Theodor Hosp, production manager of the cup plant. “The combination of several machines for one product, and the high output this entails, guarantees a cost-effective production process. Producing our own cups gives us an economical delivery situation at the filling stations.” The handling systems on the machines stack the cups before they are transported on
to the packing station. Sensors are used to detect the label during the quality assurance phase and any cups that may have been left undecorated are picked out. The cups are then checked for holes at a turning station by applying a voltage. All cups without flaws are packed in the plant’s own card- board packaging system. The dairy in Mertingen has
recently launched a new product for the Zott Jogobella line, which it supplies to the Central European markets. For
the system produces pots using labels with two different motifs simultaneously. They can also be exchanged during production due to the 32 integrated change systems. The integrated quality control combines a sensor that checks the position and the presence of the label and a high voltage check for holes. Zott says it is very pleased with its new manufacturing concept. “We not only have a very high output, but also a new transport system to the packaging machines. Thanks to the latest technology, this runs on little electricity and the version used by Zott is the first of its kind to be used in the production areas,” says Hosp. ❙
