ook closely. It’s hard to see, but that black rock-ish looking thing about to make a turn into Kelsey’s eddy is a black bear. This bear is a paddler, so Kelsey Bracewell, the photographer

and ACA’s Safety, Education, and Instruction Coordinator, was happy to have an eddy buddy. Kelsey said, “That was exciting! Until today I’ve never shared much with a bear, except an occasional trail, some wide open space, and possibly, some saliva on a fork I accidently left out at a camp site. Obviously, this is one of those exciting encounters that will only take place if you get out there and explore. Though, I can’t say I would like to be that close again.” ACA-ers love to share. We share our eddies (with humans or bears) and our network of

collective knowledge. We want people to access the water safely and easily so we endeavor to give you paddling relevant tools and knowledge to enhance your experience. We have one of the largest databases of instructors in the United States and set the gold standard for on-water instruction. Join the ACA as we encourage people of all abilities and all ages to experience waterways. ACA membership is important. As an ACA member, not only can you share your

knowledge, but you can be a part of a network of like-minded paddlers focused on important paddling issues. Please, take a kid paddling, support a waterway, explore—join the ACA! Kelsey also mentioned that while bears are welcome eddy buddies, beehives, strainers and

snakes are not. Send your Eddy Buddy pics to Kelsey at kbracewell@americancanoe.org. Welcome new ACA board members: Susan Welshman and Andrew Tush
