CHIEF OF SPORT PERFORMANCE MESSAGE FROM THE

Winter 2013 Dear Athletes,

As you may be aware, there have been some changes at the National Office in the high performance department. In July, Benita Fitzgerald-Mosley left USA Track & Field to take a position at the United States Olympic Committee. As we conduct a search for Benita’s replacement, I have been named interim chief of sport performance in addition to my normal duties with high performance programs.

The entire high performance team considers 2013 to be another successful year as evidenced by the 25 medals won at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow in addition to the outstanding performances by our juniors at the Pan American Junior Championships in Medellin, Colombia.

As we look forward to 2014 with hopes of strong medal counts at world majors and supers, there will be several new sport service initiatives rolled out in each of the broad event discipline areas.

We suspect many of our elite athletes will participate in the programs which will occur at various times throughout the year. Please look forward to receiving more details regarding these programs on the USATF website under resources in the elite athlete section.

Other positive news includes the doubling of prize money that will be available in 2014 at U.S. Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., along with the near-doubling of U.S. Outdoor Championships prize money that began in 2013.

USATF and the USOC have maintained the same levels of support from 2013, accepting an increased, special funding for five new performance initiatives under the broad event descriptions: distance, sprints & hurdles, jumps and throws.

We hope these programs and financial support will allow you to continue your development as elite, professional athletes.

As always, the high performance department stands ready to assist you in any way possible.

Happy Holidays! Sincerely,

P. Duffy Mahoney Director, High Performance Programs
