Let’s get statistical

This month’s statistical round-up condenses all (well some of) the numbers you need to know, from the oldest bike shop in the world to the number of mentions cycling gets in the National Infrastructure Plan – no prizes for guessing the latter…

Stephen Clearly, Graphic Designer. Optimum

How many bikes do you own and what’s your favourite place to ride? Currently down to one bike dedicated to downhill, but my collection is always fluctuating! My favourite place has to be Fort Bill for sure; the World Cup circuit there is beyond compare.

What’s the biggest rush achievable on a bike? Riding flat out and pushing limits.

Optimum is fairly new to the cycle trade – what’s been the highlight so far? Biggest surprise? How quickly it’s all taken off really, within the space of around 18 months the range has grown from a couple of key products to around 40 spread across the Hawkley and Nitebrite ranges. We’re constantly developing and bringing new ideas to the table and hope to show off some exciting new products very soon, watch this space!

And what’s been the biggest challenge? Keeping up with the demand, it’s grown so quickly in such a short space of time we’ve constantly had to keep an eye on stock replenishment and continually forecast ahead for the ever growing demand.

Your Nitebrite range is obviously a key range for winter riding when there’s less daylight – are any items in that range you expect to sell well in particular? We’ve had a good reaction from the Nitebrite Winter Waterproof gloves in particular, we’ve shown them off at a few cycling exhibitions including the London Bike Show and the Cycle Show and received nothing but great feedback from current and new customers alike.

How can dealers get in touch? Dealers can pay us a visit at; Optimum, 26-28 Cinnamon Brow Business Park, Makerfield Way, Wigan, Lancashire, WN2 2PR

86 BIKEBIZ JANUARY BIKEBIZ.COM 1840

Howes of Cambridge, probably the oldest bike shop in the world, closed at the end of December 2013. First founded as a coach-builder and wheel-wright in 1840, the shop is said to have sold a bicycle to Charles Darwin.

Clause 142

A new clause inserted into the Anti-social behaviour, Crime and Policing Bill will give Police Community Support Officers new powers to fine cyclists not using lights – or reflectors – on their bicycles.
