TheMicam keeps on internationalising The latest edition of TheMicam in Milan hosted 1,581 exhibitors last month,
a little higher than a year ago, thanks to a larger number of foreign firms. It occupied 68,000 square metres of space, more or less the same as last year.
The number of foreign visitors went up to 20,802 from 20,584, but a big
13% drop in domestic attendance, down to 17,819 from 20,501 in September 2012, pushed down the total to 38,621 attendees, compared with 41,085 one year ago.
The poor market situation in Italy was blamed for the fall. There were
more foreign visitors with big growth from China and Hong Kong, probably due in part to the efforts made in China through the new theMicam show.
The GDS in Dusseldorf did not perform better. The organisers reported
almost 21,000 daily visits, compared with 22,500 a year ago, but the action at both fairs will probably improve next year with the new earlier dates that they have recently announced.
Meanwhile, Assocalzaturifici, the Italian shoe industry association and
Fiera-Milano, its partner in theMicam shows in Milan and Shanghai, are seriously studying a project to hold a new fair in the US, based on the model of theMicam Shanghai. They went to the US for this purpose at the end of September together with a representative of the Italian Trade Commission.
All the options are still open and the American project is not expected to
come on-stream before 2015 at the earliest. A choice has not been made with regard to the venue, but New York seems to be the favourite right now.
The Shanghai fair, which was held for the second time last month
(October), hosted around 260 brands, around the same number as last Spring, but the number of Italian participants has gone down to around 170, partly because of the economic situation in Italy and because the dates of the show have fallen just a few days earlier than those of Obuv.
The stands at the Shanghai fair had a better look than at the previous edition. Visitors were let in through three separate entrances. They were exposed to fashion trends and invited to a lottery. A new dedicated area for children’s shoes was featured at theMicam Shanghai.
TheMicam Shanghai is starting out well with 22% more visitors
pre-registered than at its first edition last spring. The partners in theMicam Shanghai launched major information initiative to attract more visitors.
Road shows and press conferences were held in major cities in the weeks
leading up to the show, with more marketing than before in areas such as Chengdu, Zhejiang and Fujian.

Understanding Footwear Manufacture
New Courses Available in 2014 Those interested in finding out more about how footwear is made and
how to effectively manage your suppliers might be interested in a new course offered by APR Footwear Ltd.
The courses are delivered by Andy Robinson, who has been involved in
the footwear industry for over 30 years. In 1982 Andy started work with the prestigious brand Church & Co where he spent 14 years as a finishing room operative.
After spending 6 years at night school, Andy was given a role within the
Design team as a CAD Technician. In 2000 Andy took on a new challenge as the Technical Manager for
footwear with UK MOD. The next 10 years were spent managing footwear requirements, the diverse range of products included combat footwear, dress shoes, court shoes, safety footwear and trainers.
In October 2010, Andy formed APR footwear Ltd. He now provides
Technical services and training courses to the footwear industry. He has long term agreements in place with several foreign companies and
is currently the UK representative for OutDry Technologies SRL. Courses start: 25th to 26th March or 10th to 11th of June 2014
