James Murphy Dreams of Musical Subways

JAMES MURPHY of defunct New York band LCD Soundsystem has spoken with US radio talk show Sound Opinions about his aspirational New York subway project. “I’ve been fighting

for 14 years to get all the subway turnstiles to make music,” said the former frontman. “I want to make every station in New York have a different set of dominant keys, so

that people who grow up will later on in life hear a piece of music and say, ‘Oh, that’s like Union Square’. It’s such a brutal city. I think one little gift of kindness would be nice.” Murphy is no stranger to ambitious plans, having recently designed Despacio: a custom built disco sound system powered by McIntosh. The sound system will be installed at

Hammersmith Town Hall from 19-21 December. www.facebook.com/despaciosoundsystem
