HEADING WEST

While there are a few more photonics events remaining this year, the next big show on the horizon is Photonics West at the beginning of February 2014, where the entire industry will be represented, either on the show floor or in the accompanying conference programme. In this issue we give a selection of the technology some companies will be exhibiting. Also at the show, researchers at Laser Zentrum Hannover will be giving a keynote presentation on welding extremely large structures – the type found in shipbuilding, for instance – and an overview of their presentation can be found in our Photonics West preview on page 21. Elsewhere in this issue, Jessica Rowbury looks at

how lasers are being used to drill more effective cooling holes in jet engines, which allows turbines to run more efficiently. Her article on page 13 also discusses how lasers are used to monitor the air flow through turbines. Te article on page 18 concentrates on cutting and

engraving glass, where the largest market in this sector is cutting cover glass for mobile phones. Cover glass is chemically strengthened and can now be as thin as 400µm, which makes laser processing an attractive alternative to mechanical methods. Tere is also all the latest news from the industry, as

well as news from the Laser Institute of America. To subscribe for free, visit www.lasersystemseurope.com/ subscribe.
