WASTE/RECYCLING
LEAFIELD LAUNCHES NEW ‘ANTI-MICROBIAL’ ENVIROBIN
L
eafield Environmental has designed and custom-built a new anti-microbial, pedal operated recycling unit which complies with the strict cleanliness and infection control regulations of the health industry. The new bin, which was designed in association with Fm provider mitie, is made with a built-in anti-microbial additive, which provides an effective barrier against the growth of bacteria, moulds and fungi to minimise the spread of infection.
The bin can collect up to three different waste streams such as landfill waste, mixed recyclables and food or clinical waste in a compact 90-litre unit. The central lid is operated by a foot pedal which means users never need to touch the bin with their hands when depositing waste. Wheels make it easy to transfer to central collection points for emptying. The tilting mechanism at the back of the unit pulls down to simplify the removal and replacement of bags and is easily dismantled for deep cleaning. mitie managing Director, michael Taylor said: “We’re very proud to
launch the ‘anti-microbial’ Envirobin with Leafield Environmental. This innovative bin is based on key requirements from our healthcare clients, combining an anti-microbial material with a “hands-free operation” design.” the ‘anti-microbial’ Envirobin is currently being rolled out across the NHS Grampian and the NHS Lothian estates, achieving total customer satisfaction with the NHS staff, the patients and the cleaning team. leafield’s managing
Director Phil maddox said: “The health industry has struggled to get recycling programmes off the ground in the past because of the lack of suitable products available. Leafield’s design team stepped up to the challenge, working closely with mitie, to build the anti-microbial envirobin
that is ideal for their client’s needs. The new bin is also attracting attention as a popular recycling choice for other sectors concerned about maintaining high levels of
cleanliness, such as food production and catering industries. We are
constantly evolving our product portfolio to meet the changing needs of our customers.”
The new unit is
also available without the anti-microbial additive and forms part of Leafield’s growing
Envirobin brand of stylish and multi- functional recycling units designed and manufactured in-house.

Union Doors helping John Pointon & Sons Ltd maintain environmental commitment
nion Industries, the UK market leader manufacturer of industrial rapid roll doors, has helped waste management company John Pointon & Sons Ltd enhance its facilities with the installation of a new, very large Ramdoor Super at the site.
U
The Cheddleton-based, animal by- product and food waste solutions company has installed the new Ramdoor Super in its warehouse, joining a number of other Union Industries installations on site. With more than 20 Union doors already in operation on Pointon’s site to help maintain hygiene standards and contain odours, the most recent addition has been installed to replace a Union competitor’s door which failed after only 18 months! The new Ramdoor Super, with a bespoke grey coloured blade to blend in with countryside surroundings, stands at 8.7m wide x 5.6m high. It comes with extra-deep side guides, 2-ply ‘Ramhide’ door blade material and heavy duty double 6” wind-bar systems on both face
and reverse sides, so is able to withstand very high wind pressures.
The Ramdoor Super has a fast operating speed, opening fully in a matter of seconds with automatic close as standard. It offers efficiency, security and, in keeping with all other Union Industries doors, extreme reliability – unlike the existing door it replaced, which was an imported door installed as part of a project by a contractor. This inferior quality door proved to be extremely unreliable and suffered regular impact damage, and so had to be replaced in the end by the superior Union product.
Also in common with other doors in the range, the Ramdoor Super features Union’s highly-regarded ‘Crash-Out’ damage protection facility, which ensures the door remains operable if the heavy duty steel composite bottom beam is hit by a vehicle. Barney Williams, Technical Director at
John Pointon & Sons Ltd, said: “We have always been very impressed with Union Industries’ doors, hence why we have so

many on site, so naturally it made sense to turn to Union again when the alternative manufacturers’ door began to fail. “With our site hosting more than half a million tonnes of animal by-products and food waste every year, it is imperative we have reliable doors which can perform with high frequency and maintain environmental standards. For these reasons, we went to Union Industries.”
