technologies that are proven to deliver a return on investment within five years. emsc (uK) ltd, manufacturer of the uK’s market-leading voltage optimisation solution Powerstar®, is offering interest- free loans for that period. managing Director, Dr alex mardapittas, explains what is on offer and outlines the energy savings available.

Reports from St George’s University and the NHS Sustainable Development Unit have now identified the top three energy-saving technologies proven to provide the highest energy saving and payback. Key analysis from both reports is outlined in a document prepared by mcKinsey & company – version 2.1 of the ‘global greenhouse gas abatement cost curve’. The document pinpoints the top three technologies best capable of reducing carbon emissions across a range of different sized sites, as being Voltage optimisation, leD lighting and Variable speed Drives. the technologies can save the public sector vast sums by significantly reducing energy bills and will contribute greatly towards mandatory government targets to reduce UK greenhouse gas emissions. emsc (uK) ltd has secured £50 million funding to enable public and private sector companies to overcome the shortfall caused by the initial investment in these technologies to become cash positive from day one. This will free up funds to spend elsewhere.
VOLTAGE OPTIMISATION Voltage optimisation is based on a very simple but effective concept; the voltage supplied to buildings by the national Grid is, on average, 242V while the optimum rating for all electrical devices throughout the UK and Europe is just 220V – a clear and expensive discrepancy both in terms of financial outlay and the environmental cost to our planet. Voltage optimisation systems employ a device in series with the mains electricity supply to reduce the voltage coming

into a site to an optimum level. This gives three key benefits: it cuts electricity bills, reduces carbon emissions and extends the life of electrical devices by evening out potentially damaging spikes and dips in power delivery. Proven savings of, on average, 12-15% on electricity consumption have been demonstrated using emsc’s (uK) ltd market-leading range of Powerstar voltage optimisation products which are fully researched, developed, engineered and manufactured in the UK. The units can be installed in a matter of hours with a payback period of usually less than five years. To achieve maximum benefits, however, each site needs to be considered individually to effect a tailored engineered solution appropriate to that situation. Powerstar voltage optimisation systems have already been installed in thousands of different sites across the globe including government departments, retail chains, healthcare estates, education facilities, public services, leisure and sports sites and smes in a range of industries. Savings are guaranteed and, in over a decade of installations, Powerstar has recorded no failures and provides 100% reliability and security. emsc (uK) ltd is accredited with
the made in sheffield accolade in acknowledgement of the quality of its manufacturing process, its expansion into international markets, and the overall success of Powerstar, which is exported to countries including UAE, south africa, Greece, malta, Germany and Spain. The international expansion is supported by emsc (uK) ltd’s offices in australia and cyprus and in 2013 the company received the coveted UKTI Exporter of the year award. The company has also been awarded iso9001 and

is an NICEIC approved contractor. All applications for the carbon reduction funding must be made through emsc (uK) ltd by 31st December 2013 and will be subject to status and approval. Organisations can install one or more of the technologies identified in the mcKinsey & Company report with a loan that is interest free for up to five years. emsc (uK) ltd is committed to helping the UK achieve its sustainability targets and proud that these influential reports have recognised voltage optimisation as one of the top three energy saving technologies available. This is an exciting time for the company and we hope that organisations will take advantage of the very special opportunity that we are offering. To download a funding application go to
