Nico's top 5 tips

1. Build your Twitter following, but target the right people (photographers, galleries, bars, camera shops etc). Word of mouth can really help to find opportunities and promote your show. Twitter allows you to follow 1,000 people a day; make clever use of this!

2. Give yourself enough time to organise the show – two weeks can be a little too tight.

3. Don’t try a new printing company for the first time for an exhibition. Use one you know and trust to deliver.

4. Ask people and companies for sponsorship. Once you have one on board (the hardest part), you’ll be surprised how easy it is to get others.

5. Build an exclusive and solid body of work around a theme no one has seen prior to the exhibition. Hype it up and get teasers out there beforehand.

Kitbag checklist

I travel really light. I’m not one to think I need all the gear in the world, especially back-breaking DSLRs.

I use a fairly compact Domke bag. My OM-D E-M5, a couple of SD cards, a couple of charged batteries, a couple of lenses (12-50mm and 35-100mm) and that’s it. Nothing puts me off more than being packed like a donkey. I sometimes use a tripod but less and less these days.
