them for dinner. I would train, relax and write in my journal; that’s all I did. I lost in the quarterfinals in a close match and it was all done. I couldn’t believe it. I thought I would be done, but I came back and I was fortunate enough to make my second team. I said it was my last year and I wanted to make sure that the Olympic Games would be memorable, win, lose or draw. I still had tunnel vision when it came to competition, but we went to more events. In Athens, you have to see the history of the Games and the world. Ironically, I lost in the same round in another close match. It wasn’t meant to be.
USA Wrestler: What interested you about the Maryland coaching opportunity? McCoy: The biggest thing was getting close to our family. My wife was six months pregnant with our first child and the oppor- tunity came up. Our family got out to California a little bit, but it was a long trip to get there. Second, I knew Maryland had the resources and support to be nationally competitive, to make a push for a national championship. The AD at the time Debbie Yow did a lot of great things. She made the commitment to get Maryland fully funded and support and get behind the team. It was a place that with right person and support could succeed. It was tough to leave Stanford and loved it there. But to get close to family and have a program that could win at the highest level solidified my decision to make the move.
USA Wrestler: How has your Maryland program progressed? McCoy: My first year here we won the conference tourna- ment and finished 10th in the nation with three All-Americans.
Alex Krom made the NCAA semifinals as an unseeded wrestler. That was an incredible swing. We’ve have had 10 All-Americans in five years. We’ve had a guy in the NCAA semifinals three of the years. We won the conference three years. There is a lot to be proud of. Our graduation rates are almost perfect. Everyone we have come in for the most part graduates. We’ve won com- munity service and professional development awards for the team. We are successful on and off the mat, in the classroom and in the community. We have built a lot of support.
USA Wrestler: What are your thoughts about going into the
Big Ten next year? McCoy: Moving to the Big Ten is another opportunity for exposure and high level competition on a more consistent basis. The programs in the Big Ten are second to none, top to bottom. You have like-minded programs and the bar has been risen. We have to raise our bar. If you want to be the best, you have to compete with the best. Now we will be surrounded with some of the best programs in the country. Still, it’s a season away. We are focused on our impact on the ACC. Once we are done this year, we will focus on having that same impact in the Big Ten.
USA Wrestler: Can Maryland put together a team that can win an NCAA team title? McCoy: Of course. That is why I am here. If I didn’t feel like we could win, I wouldn’t be here. Is it an easy task? No way. There are other programs with tons of talent and they have things going on. If we prepare our guys the right way, given an opportunity, we can compete with any of those guys. The goal is to shoot for a team title and bring home a trophy.
