TMLT presents HIPAA seminars

Penalties, fines, and audits. They can happen if physicians don’t comply with the new HIPAA Omnibus Rule, which strengthens the privacy protections es- tablished by HIPAA. With this new rule, physicians now face even more scrutiny by the federal government, as well as new administra- tive burdens. That’s why you must evalu- ate and revise your practice’s compliance strategy and understand when to share patient information, with whom, and under what circumstances. Overprotec- tion of privacy can lead to treatment errors, patient injuries, and medical li- ability claims. The Texas Medical Liability Trust’s

(TMLT’s) 2.5-hour continuing medical education seminar, Did You Miss the HIPAA Omnibus? Protecting Patient Privacy and Patient Safety, will provide easy-to-follow guidelines for HIPAA com- pliance, including new regulations. The program will also discuss the balance be- tween patient privacy and safety. The seminars will be:

• Thursday, Oct. 10, Houston; • Tuesday, Oct. 15, Fort Worth; • Tuesday, Nov. 5, San Antonio; • Thursday, Nov. 7, Austin; • Tuesday, Nov. 19, Dallas; and • Thursday, Nov. 21, Houston.

TMLT policyholders who complete

McLennan County Medical Society president Lisa Duchamp, MD, of Waco, fits a child with a bicycle helmet at a TMA Hard Hats for Little Heads event in West in June. TMA physicians and alliance members in Bell, McLennan, and Williamson counties raised nearly $6,000 to make it happen. West was the site of a devastating fertilizer plant explosion in April. In addition to Dr. Duchamp, several physicians and their families were on hand to fit the helmets. They included Drs. Susan Pike, Georgetown; Harry Papaconstantinou, Temple; Roy and Allison Smythe, Temple; and Julie Ruiz, Temple. Dr. Pike, a member of the TMA Foundation board, said the event was another way to leverage the Hard Hats program to not only “improve safety for these children, but also improve little lives in big ways.”

Nominate a journalist for health reporting

Have you read, heard, or seen a great health news story this year? If so, take a moment now to nominate it for a TMA Anson Jones, MD, Award.

This is the first time members of the TMA family can nominate journalists for the Anson Jones awards, which recog- nize excellence in health journalism in Texas. Nominating one or two of your lo-

The Anson Jones competition recog- nizes print, broadcast (television and radio), and online media, plus a Texas Health Journalist of the Year Award. Physician-reporters also are recognized with the Physician Excellence in Re- porting category. So nominate your col- leagues’ outstanding journalism, too. It’s easy to nominate your local jour-
