Up-and-coming kindergartners got to play with iPads, thanks to Califor- nia Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks. CLU loaned the iPads to First 5, a community group that helps kids who don’t attend preschool adjust to a kindergarten classroom. The iPads introduced the children to Com-

mon Core, a curriculum designed to improve their comprehension of English and math through modern learning methods.

Smoke-and-tobacco free. That’s what the campus at Finlandia University, Hancock, Mich., became this fall.

The policy applies to all university indoor and outdoor areas, activities and properties. It took effect at the urging of students, campus groups and university employees. Fin- landia President Philip R. Johnson, an ELCA pastor, said, “Encouraging the overall good health of students and employees was an important consideration.”

A shuttered college campus returns to the ELCA family. Midland Uni- versity, Fremont, Neb., in partner- ship with Krejci Development LLC, acquired control of the 130-year- old Dana College campus in Blair, Neb., which closed in 2010. Mid- land is preparing to launch a capital campaign to raise the $11 million in deferred maintenance and start-up costs required to restore the Dana campus. Successful completion of the campaign and approval from Mid land’s accrediting commission will be required before students can return to the campus. Midland lead- ers said that could occur by 2015 or 2016. For more information, visit www.dana.midlandu.edu.

Pastors, Sunday school teachers and other laity can now take both non- credit and continuing education courses from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C., which in 2011 became part of the School of Theology of Lenoir-Rhyne University, Hickory, N.C. The semi- nary’s new Academy of Faith and Leadership offers lectures, retreats, seminaries, Scripture studies and other resources for lay and clergy. Clayton Schmit, seminary provost, said the academy “fills a need” in the region to equip Christians for min- istry in the world. As leaders plan courses, they are seeking community requests and feedback at www.ltss. lr.edu/afl. 
