Leading Ladies

Research by USBTrader.com revealed that the majority of sales managers find their female staff ‘more effective, organised and trustworthy, and more likely to close a deal’ than their male counterparts...

F Published by: Digital sponsor:

urthermore, buyers found saleswomen to be ‘more courteous, less pushy and far less likely to arrive late at a meeting’. Big up the ladies – though I’m not sure what is to be gained from too much Men-are- from-Mars demarcation along the gender lines... As I write,

however, the debate about boardroom quotas rages on with arguments for and against the positive discrimination issue made by men and women both on either side.

So it’s remarkable, in some ways, to refl ect on just how far we have come. This year marks the centenary of the death of suffragette Emily Wilding Davison, trampled by the King’s horse at the Epsom Derby; it is possible that she was attempting to place a ‘Votes for Women’ banner on the animal. The Representation of the People Act was passed in 1918 and the subsequent enfranchisement of women took place, fi ve years after Davison’s act.

Since the original meaning of ‘franchised’ is ‘bestowed with the right to vote’ I thought it appropriate to highlight key leaders in the franchise industry who just also happen to be female. Our interview with Pam Bader, OBE, CEO of Molly Maid, and mentor and supporter of other women in franchising, is on page 24 along with our profi les of other impressive leading and upcoming female franchisors.

As well as a spotlight on franchise expansion opportunities in Canada (page 18), there’s also plenty of advice on how all franchisors – regardless of size or the gender of who’s at the helm – can take steps to stay ahead of the game. After all, guy or gal, no one can afford to rest on their laurels.
