We are sad to report the deaths of the dhrupad vocal maestro and music teacher Zia Fariduddin Dagar of the Dagar family of Hindustan on 9th April aged 80; of the master violinist of the South Indian tradition Lalgudi Jayaraman on 22nd April aged 82; of Shanachie Records co-founder Dan Collins on 15th May, aged 75; of the Tamil playback singer T.M. Soundararajan on 25th May aged 91; of the Irish broadcaster, documentary-maker and folksong collector Proinsias Ó Conluain on 30th May, aged 93; of Scottish singer songwriter and former McCalmans member Nick Keir on 2nd June aged 60;of Nigerian Highlife pioneer Fatai ‘Rolling Dollar’ Olagunji on 12th June, aged 85; of the Iranian classical musician and tar maestro Jalil Shahnaz on 17th June, aged 92; and of soul blues king Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland on 23rd June, aged 83.

BBC4 TV are in the process of producing a swathe of world music films for a mini-season in late August, with directors including Jeremy Marre and Ellen Hobson and a film on flamenco (Friday 30th August) presented by fRoots very own Elizabeth Kinder. We couldn’t get any further information at press time; watch the listings.


BBC Radio 3’s World On 3 (Fridays at 11pm) has Womad highlights on 2nd August, Mary Ann Kennedy pesenting all-CD shows on Aug 9th/16th and Sept 6th/13th. Lopa Kothari presents a session from Sam Amidon on 23rd Aug and all-CD shows on 30th Aug and 20th/27th Sept.

Womex have announced that the recipient of this year’s Womex Artist Award will be Los Van Van from Cuba, formed in 1969 by bassist and composer Juan Formell. They receive their award and give a performance to close Womex in Cardiff on Sunday 27th October.

Major names in English folk music, including Kate Rusby and Seth Lakeman, will perform at a sold out English Folk Expo 2013 (17th – 20th October). This is the inaugural event of an annual industry showcase of English folk, roots and acoustic music, held in Bury, Greater Manchester. Launched with a night curated by BBC Radio 2 Folk Show’s Mark Radcliffe, English Folk Expo will give an audience of UK and international music buyers the chance to experience a packed programme of English folk music talent across one weekend plus private networking events, a trade fair and more.
