a physician in private practice, he under- stands the challenges his colleagues face. “We often cannot control change,” he said, “but we can control how we re- spond. I believe patients and physicians must come together to reclaim health care. Only together can we face the chal- lenge of improving health care for future generations.” Dr. King has dedicated more than 30 years to improving the health of Tex- ans. He is a past president of the Taylor- Jones-Haskell-Callahan County Medical Society and has represented it as a del- egate to TMA’s House of Delegates. Dr. King has a long history in orga- nized medicine. He has served as county medical society president, chair of the TMA Council on Legislation, a trustee of the TMA Foundation, executive board member of TEXPAC, board liaison to the Texas Medical Liability Trust, and mem- ber of numerous committees. He also has helped guide successful TMA legis- lation including the passage of the land- mark medical malpractice reforms and noneconomic damage cap constitutional amendment in 2003. Dr. King has been in private practice for the past 34 years in Abilene, where he runs a clinical voice research lab. He has coauthored a textbook on the human voice and authored multiple journal ar- ticles and three educational CDs dealing with voice pathology. Dr. King also built one of the first ambulatory surgical cen- ters in Texas. Dr. King is married to State Rep. Su- san King (R-Abilene), who serves on the House Appropriations and Public Health committees. She is an active surgical nurse and former president of the Abilene Independent School Dis- trict. They have three children and three grandchildren.


For the 15th year, the TMA Board of Trustees awarded nine $5,000 scholarships to talented minority medical students at TexMed 2013. Recipients are Roy Espinosa, Carolina White, Clayton Allison, Elizabeth De La Rosa, Valerie Peicher, Monique Rodriguez, and Daniel Ayala. Mauro Silva and Melissa Vasquez are not pictured.
