Introducing new technology for wind energy management Important offshore wind tests are taking place on land in Denmark
The world’s largest land based wind turbine test center, located in Oesterild Klitplantage in the northern part of Denmark, is experimenting with new technology that is changing the future of wind energy. While Schneider Electric™ does not create wind turbines, the company’s energy management solutions are critical in the transport of usable energy from offshore wind turbines to the power grid.
Effi cient conversion of wind into power In collaboration with strategic partners, Schneider Electric is developing comprehensive solutions to convert wind energy into a reliable and affordable source of power generation in the electrical grid. “Schneider Electric is working to ensure that the electrical energy produced by the turbines is distributed to the grid with optimal protection and quality,” says Joe Andersen, Business Development Director for Wind Power, Schneider Electric in Europe.
Part of the installation includes a unique medium voltage (MV) system that is connected to seven high-performance wind turbines. Energy is gathered and then sent to a centralized station encompassing a GIS system with a 36 kV GHA double rail, SCS Substation Control System, and equipment such as UPS. Flexible design allows the system to run both 50 and 60 Hz, which means wind turbines can be tested for both the European and North American power grids.
The brain of the Schneider Electric substation is the intelligent SCADA system which maximizes visibility of power, current, and voltage data and enables operators to monitor and run the system with efficiency. And the system helps protect the installation and turbines from lightning strikes and other forces.
Electrical energy produced by these turbines is distributed to the grid with optimal protection and quality.
The future demands clean, dependable energy Tests at the site in Denmark are revealing how energy from wind turbines can be generated and distributed to the power grid with ideal efficiency. While wind has yet to dominate the renewable energy market because of the significant capital expenses required to build wind turbines, these important tests give hope for a greener future.
