TRAIN LIKE A CHAMPION! All of us in USA Weightlifting applaud


the efforts and results of our Junior World Team as they return from a successful outing in Lima, Peru, May 3-11. Of course this success would not be possible with- out the dedication that is made by the athletes, their coaches and their families. Still, what is generally seen by the public is only a superficial idea of what is actually occurring as these athletes prepare for international competition. Under the direction of Zygmunt Smalcerz,


the Resident Team Training Program is based upon both the skills of the High Performance Athletes that are at the Olympic Training Cen- ter in Colorado Springs and Coach Smalcerz’s ability to fine-tune the programs to the needs of the individual.


The basic program consists of six days


per week. There are three days of single session Training and three days of double session training. Coach Smalcerz has a menu of 39 Snatch movements, 33 clean movements and 23 Jerk movements. The Snatch and the Clean & Jerk are the end result of all the training that is completed so the athlete can Snatch and Clean & Jerk. Coach Smalcerz’s unique approach to programming is that while each session is, typically, a Snatch session or a Clean & Jerk session the progressions are placed in order and exercises selected to address the specific concerns of each athlete. Coach Smalcerz does not believe in tell-


ing the athlete what they are doing wrong, he believes in putting in an exercise to rein-


force the proper technique. Coach Smalcerz will write up Tuesday’s training based upon how he evaluated Monday’s training as is each and every day.
