more than 31,000 nonaccidental gun-re- lated deaths in the United States in 2010. Accidental firearm-related deaths, although tragic, don’t provoke the out- raged national reaction that a massacre does. Accidents provoke the demand for better security of firearms, whereas the large-scale massacres provoke a na- tional outcry for increased firearm con- trol. These are vastly different issues, and even proponents of unlimited gun access seem to be overwhelmingly in fa- vor of good security of personal firearms. I agree that gun control is a thorny


issue. Possession of a gun is a constitu- tionally protected right. I also agree with the argument that as long as there is free access to firearms, we will be exposed to intermittent acts of random violence and unnecessary deaths. As long as we are prepared to accept and deal with this senseless loss of life, then there may be less need to control access to a variety of guns.
