What the retailers had to say:

"Retailers are now in an era where they have created their own monster with regards to pricing. There are sales every other week, price wars and aggressive discounting. What needs to happen is retailers go back to having proper sales at the end of seasons to move through old stock. The reason for this is because so many retailers give away so much profit in sales/ discounts that there cost bases cannot support it and they go to the wall. Without greater periods of the year, where we sell at full price, businesses will continue to fail.

"Over the Easter weekend two of my competitors within 30 miles were doing discounts of 20-30% off all brands. I on the otherhand focussed on making sure my shop windows looked great, the staff were in place and I held my nerve and refused to follow, as I knew that weekend the towns would be busy anyway. The result: I had a great weekend's trading and never gave a way a penny discount! Most independents have brands not found in supermarkets and large multiples, so why do we think we have to behave like them?

"Retailers need to look at what they are giving away. A business which turns over £1million pounds, if they do deals throughout the year which equate to, say 10% off, that's a massive £100,000. "Most businesses' profit normally equates to between 10-20% of their turnover after all costs are taken into account. It doesn't take much to see the negative effect on a business by a poor pricing strategy.

"With reference to the weather, I think every supplier should have a bit more compassion and understanding for the retailers, but they should also be urging every retailer not to go into sale in July, as it will allow retailers more time to sell at full price and pay for the stock before the next season starts.” Donna Read, Shooze with Sole (Kilmarnock)
