raditional favorites can become surprise enemies if you or your kids struggle with common food intolerances. Some families battle multiple food concerns, including gluten, dairy, nuts, egg, and soy; indeed, these five ingredients (plus fish and shellfish) account for 90 percent of food allergy reactions in children.
Fortunately, it’s increasingly easy to shop for and cook allergen-free foods. Check out

Ask your store clerk to show you the store’s labels for allergen-free foods as well as dedicated gluten- and dairy-free sections. And then get cooking! Here’s how to make easy, tempting dishes with your kids without the five most problematic ingredients—you and your children will never notice what’s missing.

Everyone’s favorite flavors combine in this delicious, allergen-free dessert. Get kids involved by letting them toss the filling and topping ingredients separately and then placing them in the pan.
FRUIT FILLING
2 organic Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and diced 2 tablespoons natural cane sugar 2 tablespoons brown rice flour ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 (10-ounce) bag frozen strawberries, thawed
TOPPING
1 cup gluten-free rolled oats 1
/3 cup brown rice flour
3 tablespoons organic canola oil 2 tablespoons natural cane sugar
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon 1
cup dairy- and soy-free semisweet chocolate chips (such as Enjoy Life)

1. Preheat oven to 350°. 2. Combine apples, sugar, flour, and
cinnamon in a bowl. Gently fold in strawberries.
Pour into an 8x8-inch baking pan. 3. Combine oats, flour, oil, sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl. Sprinkle oat mixture evenly over strawberries. Sprinkle chocolate chips over top. Bake for 35 minutes.
