The Shiva trilogy destroys the competition, while porn and the pope are strong in Spain and Italy. Tom Tivnan reports


THE EAGERLY AWAITED third book in Amish Tripathi’s SFF Shiva trilogy, Te Oath of the Vayuputras, has stormed the charts in India, shifting almost 145,000 copies in just five weeks through BookScan India since 27th February. To give context, the bestselling Indian novel of 2012, Chetham Bhagat’s Revolution 2020, sold 111,000 units all of last year. Tripathi’s three novels—recently released in the UK by Quercus imprint Jo Fletcher Books—have earned twice as much money, INR54.2m (£649,000), as the rest of the top 20 novels combined (INR27m). Young India Wants, is for the first quarter of 2013 what it was in 2012: the bestselling Indian non-fiction title. It has sold more than 250,000 copies in India since being released in October 2011. Troughout the Spanish and


Italian charts there is a bit of sinner and saint dichotomy. All three books in the Fifty Shades erotica trilogy sit firmly atop the Spanish fiction top 10 (and the boxed set is sixth), while Cinquanta sfumature di grigio is the eighth bestselling title in Italy (the other two in James’ series are in positions 11 and 12), plus Andrea Camilleri strays from his Inspector Montalbano series for the saucy Il tuttomio. Yet religion figures heavily. Te


pontifex emeritus, Joseph Ratzinger, a.k.a. Benedict XVI, tops Italian non-fiction, and is second in Spain with Te Childhood of Jesus. Benedict also appears on the Italian charts in less holy circumstances in Sua Santità, perhaps better known internationally as the “Vatileaks” book—journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi’s exposé of the papacy from secret papers stolen by Benedict’s personal butler.
