Today’s dress code is Lolita and/or Mrs Tatcher: Te Early Years. Te Hot Book is anything that features paraplegic lesbians with an obsession for Fight Club, the wi-fi password is quickhideandrewwylieisstaringatme and the Dish of the Day is David Shelley. If anyone needs me, I will be at the Random House stand because they have the best smoothies (Ben Dunn, Bill Scott-Kerr and Jason Arthur). I am NOT accepting any pre-empts today either. I want to prolong the fun of selling all my hastily repackaged unsold proposals from Frankfurt 2012—it’s amazing what a new title, author name and one-line pitch can do. After a tough day wheeling and

dealing at Earls Court yesterday, it was great to see so many of you at Buckingham Palace last night for Her Majesty’s LBF meet and greet. While I thought her opening speech was pitch-perfect about Words Going Further, it was obviously a shame when the Duke of Edinburgh stormed into the ballroom in Greek national dress, sending Sonny Mehta and Lord Byng flying headfirst into a pack of corgis, and shouting: “Cabbage! Why are there so many bloody people in my house wearing corduroy and looking like unemployed geography teachers?” Luckily he was quickly distracted by Caroline Michel’s ankles while we all queued up to thank the Queen for her hospitality and to surreptitiously slip her our business cards. I hope my pressing but informal

with new-best-friend-and-hopefully- soon-to-be-client Pippa Middleton at Whisky Mist was an absolute hoot. Nietzsche’s philosophy that the moral outlook is merely a psychological projection of the hatred and resentment that weak human beings have for their betters with a very tolerant-looking Alain de Botton, I headed straight on to the Conville & Walsh/Curtis Brown merger party at Te Groucho. It was rather confusing and left my head spinning—the first room was studded with diamonds and featured a large Jonny Geller statue made of gold that the Curtis Brown junior agents sat around, burning £50 notes and chanting: “One day I might be this important.” In the second room, Patrick
Walsh was dressed as the devil with smoke pouring from every orifice as his junior imps processed behind him carrying his huge priapic tail around the room. Te devil certainly had all the good tunes, but the smart money was on the Geller room. It’s going to be a big day tomorrow
as we will all be honouring the guest nation of Brazil—I know, I know, Brazil is Frankfurt’s 2013 guest, but I do love a mojito—and the life of Mrs Tatcher. To that end, all lady agents and publishers are expected to dress in ’80s power suits and, ahem, have their “hair” styled accordingly. As your guide and mentor for the LBF, I have of course booked you all in to waxing appointments at the LBF beauty salon in aisle nine. Bring the painkillers.
