AMERICAN GIRL AND WIMPY KID RULE THE CHARTS


Gillian Flynn hits the heights, Jeff Kinney conquers, while diets and Jesus reign in non- fiction. Tom Tivnan reports


THE BREAKOUT NOVEL in Britain in 2013 is Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, the only fiction title to top £1m in the first quarter through Nielsen BookScan. As with Fifty Shades trilogy last year, the UK is somewhat behind its former colony, with Flynn’s thriller muscling onto the US charts last summer. Yet Gone Girl is still selling quite well in America, and has shifted just under 900,000 units through BookScan US since June 2012. Of course, print tells just a part of


the story. With Amazon still dragging its feet in sharing e-book data, in March Te Bookseller compiled e-book sales for the top 50 books for 2013 with figures supplied by publishers. UK e-books sales were greatly


influenced by the controversial Sony-led, Amazon price-matched 20p promotion. Life of Pi was the fourth bestselling print novel, driven by the film tie-in. But Yann Martel’s book shifted an incredible 423,000 digital units, the bulk of which cost 20p; “e” and “p” combined it would best Gone Girl by 289,000 copies. Non-Fiction shows the US’ and


UK’s divided tastes. Americans favour religious themes and books written by right-wing blowhards, such as Proof of Heaven; Jesus Calling and Killing Kennedy. Britons, meanwhile, seem obsessed with eating (Jamie’s 15-minute Meals, Te Great Comic Relief Bake Off) and shedding the pounds as a result of that eating (Te Fast Diet, Te Hairy Dieters). Te Fast Diet has been a boon for Short Books, selling 272,000 units; in all of 2012, Short Books sold 101,000 copies for its entire list. Jeff Kinney, meanwhile, continues


to conquer the world. Te Wimpy Kid books have sold around 80 million units globally, 5.4 million and 21.6 million through BookScan UK and US respectively.
