was only intensified by the rumor that the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, would attend the finals and present awards to the medaling teams! By the time the medal round was about to start there must
have been somewhere near 15,000 people in the arena. When Jordan Burroughs walked out of the tunnel to face off
for the dual, people were hanging over the railings waving, screaming, yelling, ‘Jor-Dan, Jor-Dan, Jor-Dan’ with an accent. They were hoping to maybe just get an autograph! To say this event drew attention was quite an understatement,
given the timing, location and significance. A CNN World News crew happened to be in Iran to cover U.S.-Iran nuclear talks and they obtained credentials to cover the World Cup. The wrestling coverage provided an opportune chance to tell
our story to the World. Iran defeated Russia in the finals finishing gold and silver, respectively, and our U.S. team won the bronze over Belarus. The Iranian President was there and presented awards to the top three teams. When on the podium Ahmedinejad showed his support for wrestling, staying to shake hands with a few U.S. athletes and taking pictures while presenting the trophy to Zeke Jones. No matter your political feelings about the Iranian president, it
was a testament to the influence of our great sport. Even leaving the World Cup venue was an event in itself.
When Team USA left the competition hall, we were met with a mob of people 400 strong. Most of them were excited to see
Americans in Iran and to tell you how they ‘love U-S-A!’ Still chanting. Still cheering. After one session a particularly large group was waiting out-
side. I saw them and didn’t think too much of it until I realized they were converging and coming my way screaming ‘Jor-Dan!’ Jordan Burroughs had walked out of the door right behind me. The two of us being the last of our team, I looked back knowing he would never get through the crowd. I grabbed Jordan around the waist and started toward the
bus! As we made our way through the sea of people, we actually
had full-grown men trying to jump between us in order to get a photo or autograph! It was crazy, but what an experience! The World Cup was an awesome display. It showed how our
sport brings people of all sizes, races, religions and walks of life together. It builds bridges between people and governments that might otherwise be politically opposed. Where else do you see a con- troversial world leader presenting a trophy to a sports team from the USA? It showed how competitors and fans develop mutual respect
for one another and band together with a common goal for a right cause. It is a great honor to be part of USA Wrestling and the 2013
World Cup coaching staff. I look forward to the day, a long time from now, when the question will be asked, “Where were you when Olympic wrestling was saved?” I’ll know exactly where!
