frost heaves that develop in streets, highways and parking lots. The system can also be used to make repairs to asphalt driveways, trails and golf cart paths.

Bobcat asphalt preservation tools improve the process of repairing surfaces, with less manpower (only two crew members) and materials needed. Because of the compact size of the loader and attachments, the system can work within a single lane, minimizing traffi c disruption. Additionally, only one adequately sized truck and trailer are required to transport the Bobcat loader, heater and processor.

AH30 ASPHALT HEATER The AH30 asphalt heater is powered by a 36 kVA generator and moved from repair to repair, using a Bobcat loader and the Bob-Tach® attachment mounting system. To get started, the heater is activated by pressing an on/ off switch. Once the required temperature is reached, the loader operator removes the heater and attaches the AP40 asphalt processor.

AP40 ASPHALT PROCESSOR Powered by the auxiliary hydraulics on a Bobcat loader, the AP40 asphalt processor mixes, processes and levels the asphalt surface to the desired depth. The AP40 has a direct drive motor with few moving parts for optimal performance. Similar to a

tiller in soil, the processor’s tines mix the asphalt into a reusable material.

This process is completed a few times as necessary, and the Bobcat loader operator uses the attachment’s skid wings to push material back to the middle and level it to prepare for compaction.

APPROVED CARRIERS Bobcat 700- and 800-frame- size loaders are approved for use with the AH30 and AP40 tools. For models other than an S850 or T870, a 400-pound counterweight kit is required.

ADDITIONAL ITEMS NEEDED The following items are needed to complete the asphalt repair process:

■ Asphalt rake ■ Infrared thermometer or metal probe

■ Liquid asphalt rejuvenator, available from Bobcat Parts

■ Walk-behind drum compactor

■ Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP)

■ Shovel

ECO-FRIENDLY The new Bobcat asphalt preservation system is an answer to a growing need for eco-friendly repairs. Existing asphalt is reused onsite, rather than delivering expensive asphalt (hot mix) to the repair. This can save as much as 60 percent of the costs associated with conventional asphalt repair methods, eliminating the need to transport, process and stockpile raw materials. Also, asphalt preservation tools can be used in the harshest conditions, miles away from a batch plant, because it doesn’t need hot mix asphalt.

Asphalt preservation tools from Bobcat Company are just another example of how Bobcat equipment can be operated to fi x a growing challenge — the aging asphalt that makes up approximately 94 percent of the more than 2 million miles of paved roads and highways in the United States.
