AFTER WORKING ON EXCAVATORS FOR TWO DECADES, KENNY WILLIAMSON KNEW EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTED TO BUY WHEN HE STARTED HIS EXCAVATING COMPANY


Twenty years of experience working as a mechanic for rental centers put Kenny Williamson inside almost every brand of compact excavator available.


“I’ve worked on them all, I’ve seen it all,” he says. “So when I decided to go into business for myself, I thought it best to maximize that experience by getting into a fi eld where I could use the type of equipment I had been repairing. And when it came time to buy my own excavator, I knew exactly what I wanted — a machine that was tough and durable and easy to service and parts that were readily available.”


He made one phone call, to Hugg & Hall Equipment in Little Rock, Ark., and ordered a Bobcat®

excavator. It fi t his wish list of features perfectly and his second excavator, an E42, brought some additional benefi ts that not only validated his initial decision but allowed him to work more productively and comfortably.


“Since I make my living only with an excavator, I need a machine that is durable and tough enough to handle whatever type of work I’m doing, one


that is easy to repair with available parts,” says the owner of Landscapes and Features, Inc., Austin, Ark. “Over two decades I learned which machines break down most often, which ones are diffi cult to fi x and the diffi culty of getting parts for some. With one brand that I used to work on, at times we had to wait up to six months for parts. How much revenue do you think that machine generated for its owner?”


E42 DELIVERS ON DEMAND Initially Williamson did substantial business in landscaping, and for six years his fi rst Bobcat excavator was a reliable income-producer. He replaced the 430 with a new E42, an even better machine that is delivering superior results even as the type of Williamson’s work changes.


“As landscaping dwindled because of the economy, I found other opportunities that now are the focus of my business,” he says, pointing out that installation of septic systems and landfi ll trenching projects keep him busy.


“I put in a lot of gas and water lines at landfi lls,” says Williamson, “and that’s where the speed of the E42 really pays off. With decent ground, I can dig a minimum of 2,000 feet per day (3 to 4 feet deep). Also, with the long-arm option, I don’t have to reposition as often. One trench was six miles long. With this machine I’m digging, dumping and then right back digging. Other excavators cause you to sit and wait a lot more. There is a big difference in speed between Bobcat and the competition.”

“I like the bigger cab — it’s a unique design that is very user-friendly,” he says. “I have never operated a more comfortable machine.”


Williamson says that when he is on the job he often sees other excavators working nearby.


“None of them seem as productive as the one I’m operating,” he says. “If I stay at one job too long I’m not making money. With the E42, I complete my work quickly and move on — that’s the way to produce income.”
