carbon brake track that is reinforced by an in- ternal aluminum spine. The rim’s clincher bead hooks and un-drilled tire bed are also aluminum. The company’s Zack Vestal said the hybrid

construction results in a lightweight rim with excellent durability and braking performance. Even with the aluminum spine, the rim comes in about 30 grams lighter than competitors’ all- carbon rims, Vestal said. And the carbon brake surface is for more

than looks. “The exterior carbon provides structural ad-

vantages: It helps resist outward pressure from the tires, and the specially blended heat-treated carbon resists wear over time from abrasion. So the whole sidewall can be made thinner and lighter than with aluminum alone,” Vestal said. He said wrapping the carbon over the brake

surface also creates more contact surface for bonding the carbon to the aluminum, which allows for a superlight aluminum hoop. Also, there’s much more contact surface for

continuous bonding of the deep-section carbon in the rim profile, so again the inner aluminum hoop can be made superlight. Mavic has been cautious about releasing a

carbon clincher, a product category that has been plagued by durability and braking performance issues. But the company says its design

offers enhanced structural resistance to tire air pressure and brake heat buildup, added radial impact resis- tance, and precise tire fit and brake track geometry. The rim’s carbon construction

uses two types of resin plus a specific heat-treatment protocol to optimize heat management. A special surface treatment on the brake track is said to improve braking efficiency in both wet and dry conditions. The company claims the rim offers wet braking distances that are half that of current carbon wheels on the market. The wheel has a 40-millime-

ter rim profile shaped to optimize handling in crosswinds and reduce head-on wind resistance. The CC40C WTS wheels weigh

1,545 grams per pair. The company noted that a rim strip is not

needed, saving additional weight. The hubs have carbon shells and aluminum flanges and axles.

Spokes are bladed and butted stainless steel with external alloy nipples. There are 16 radial-

laced front spokes and 20 radial/1-cross spokes on the rear. Mavic will offer a wheel-tire system with a GripLink clincher front tire and PowerLink clincher rear tire.

The wheels will be available June 1, and the

$2,750 price includes the tires, tubes, QR skew- ers and travel bags.
