residents were unarmed and powerless to defend themselves. Violent crime in- creased after the law was enacted, with homicides rising to 369 in 1988, from 188 in 1976 when the ban started. By 1993, annual homicides had reached 454 ... Since the gun ban was struck down, murders in the district have steadily gone down, from 186 in 2008 to 88 in 2012, the lowest number since the law was enacted in 1976.” Arguments against semiautomatic ri- fles include the lack of a legitimate need for a multiple cartridge capacity weapon. In the 1992 Los Angeles riots, that city exploded into violence. The police there “pulled back for their own safety,” leav- ing the citizenry defenseless. Fifty-six citizens were murdered, and 2,000 were seriously injured. Korean store owners were targeted in certain neighborhoods, but defended themselves using those de- famed “high-capacity” magazines. Some on the Left advocate follow-

ing Europe’s example of outlawing gun ownership. A Feb. 19, 2013, article in the British publication, The Daily Mail, reports that in 2009, 3.6 percent of the British population were victims of vio- lent crime, compared with 2 percent of Americans. A disarmed populace is less able to defend itself.

The answer to the Newtown-type

murders is something we as physicians can be instrumental in, by identifying those dangerous individuals likely to

commit them. We need to identify and treat them before they destroy their own and others’ lives. Two young men known to be danger- ous and disturbed committed the mass murders in Colorado and Connecticut. We also need to identify violent felons and keep them off the street. The answer to violence is not to cre-

ate more laws, but to enforce the exist- ing laws. Many pressing problems face our country, and there is a major philo- sophical divide in how to approach them. We need to return to our core values of faith and liberty. The answer to our problems, including crime and violence, is not in more federal laws and regula- tions. We are all familiar with the in- creasing problems in health care caused by federal regulation and intervention. Federal intervention through gun regu- lation causes problems as well, not the least of which is decreasing citizens’ safety while claiming to make them safer. The answer to most societal problems

is in the home. We need to teach our children that hard work, faith, and mo- rality are the keys to success and happi- ness. We need to return to our founding principles of faith and individual liberty. As Benjamin Franklin said, “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” n
