Belmo fi nally nabs his fi rst PBA major at the Masters

Australian two-hander Jason

Belmonte has a deep appreciation for bowling history. He got to be part of that history when he tossed six consecutive strikes to topple Wes Malott, 258-245, in the fi nal of the United States Bowling Congress Masters at Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick, N.J., in late February.

It was Belmonte’s fi rst PBA major title, and made him just the second international player to win the Masters. (Finland’s Mika Koivuniemi won in 2000.) “You come out on the PBA Tour,” said the elated Aussie, “the hardest tour in the world with the greatest players in the world, and at the top of that tree are the majors. To fi nally get atop one and check out the view for the fi rst time is golden. It’s absolutely beautiful.” Despite closing with his string of strikes, Belmonte could only watch as Malott attempted to steal the title with three strikes of his own. After striking on his fi rst shot in the 10th, Malott could only muster seven pins on his second ball, handing Belmonte the title.
