The 6th annual Atlantic Paddling Symposium will be held in Saint John, New Brunswick, from May 10–13. Participants will paddle the Bay of Fundy, Reversing Falls and nearby lakes and rivers. Coaches currently include Rob Lemmon, Graham Ketcheson, Blair Doyle, Richard Alexander and Alan Stanley. If you are a Paddle Canada certi- fied instructor or instructor trainer, please contact event organisers if you are interested in coaching.
RIDEAU CANAL VOYAGEUR CANOE BRIGADE 2013
August 5–16 from Kingston to Ottawa, ON

The Voyageur Brigade Society is organising a voyageur canoe trip from Kingston to Ottawa on the Rideau Canal. The Brigade will consist of up to 10 teams of nine to12 participants. The 22–36- foot furtrade-style canoes will be paddled by five to 10 paddlers at a time, with the non-paddlers setting up camp. Individuals may contact event organisers to be placed in a crew. Prices are $300–$325 per person, including the big canoe rental. Crews providing their own canoes will pay a lower fee. The Voyageur Brigade Society has organised several similar Brigades in the past. Please see their website for more information on the Rideau Canal and past brigades. Please submit registration by April 1, 2013.
FRASER RIVER VOYAGEUR CANOE BRIGADE 2013

The Fort Langley Canoe Club will host the 2013 Fraser River Brigade. The Brigade will start in the resort town of Harrison, paddle down the Harrison River and then into the Fraser River. The organising committee is expecting 10 to 15 teams to join. Each crew will be self-sufficient and will provide vehicle support for their paddlers and shore crew. The Fort Langley Canoe Club is organizing the camping and will provide historical vignettes and background information on the river and its denizens. The trip will end with a feast near the finish line, close to the Salish Sea. Registration costs $150 per person and teams are expected to be roughly 12 persons. Total fees ($1,800) are due no later than April 30, 2013.

The event base will be located at the luxury Ye Olde Argyler Lodge. The planning committee has selected a world-class coaching team to provide the best on- and off-water experience for partici- pants. Time off-water will feature guest speakers presenting on spectacular expeditions. The symposium’s mission is to support new friend- ships, skill development and your spirit to paddle. The symposium will create a vibrant community network among participants. Coaches have been selected from the U.K., Canada and the U.S.

The Pacific Paddling Symposium brings together the sea kayaking community for an inspiring three-day experience, focusing on skills, educa- tion, leadership, heritage, safety and camraderie. It will be hosted at the beautiful seaside village campus of the Lester B. Pearson United World College on the wooded shores of the Pacific Ocean. The location provides easy access to diverse paddling environments—from the pro- tected waters of Pedder Bay, to the challenging tidal currents of Race Passage.

The Yukon River Quest is the world’s longest canoe and kayak race. It is known as the “Race to the Midnight Sun” because paddlers race around the clock and night never falls. Deadline for entries is May 15, 2013. There is a limit of 100 teams and 30 spots are reserved for solo participants. Race entry fees are $850 for tandem canoes, $475 for solo canoes and kayaks and $250 per person for voyageur canoes of six or more paddlers. Cash prizes are awarded based on top finishers in de- fined categories. Race participants are required to have serviced SPOT GPS devices and are strongly encouraged to have significant paddling, wilder- ness survival and adventure race experience.

SCHOLARSHIP
ON BEHALF of the Bill Mason Memorial Scholarship Fund Selec- tion Committee and the Board of Directors of Paddle Canada, we are pleased to announce Kevin Amirault as the recipient of the Bill Mason Memorial Scholar- ship Award. Kevin will receive a cheque for $1,000 from the scholarship fund to assist in his academic studies. Kevin is currently a fourth-year
student at Laurentian University in the Outdoor Adventure Leader- ship Program. In addition to his studies, he is a member of the varsity rowing team. Kevin has paddled across much of Canada— the Alsek River in the Yukon, the Churchill in Saskatchewan and the Harricana in Quebec. Kevin recently worked at Camp Chief Hector in the Bow Valley near Canmore, Alberta. Kevin has a long- term goal of a career in the field of Adventure Therapy. He also plans to complete a graduate degree. We are confident that Kevin
will carry the philosophies, vision and memories of the great Canadi- an paddler and conservationist Bill Mason to future generations.
