He might complain about parenthood, but writer and photographer Aaron Peterson is glad to be raising his rugrats in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. He writes about escaping with his wife Kristen for a hot date on the cold lake in this issue’s Waterlines (page 16). “We miss the days of weeklong kayak camping trips,” says Peterson, “but we’re making peace with being in the canoe stage of life.”

JASPER WINN YEARS

Winn wrote about circumnavigating his home isle in Paddle: A Long Way Around Ireland, his first book, and is currently working on a new book about living and traveling for 10 months with a nomadic Berber clan in North Africa. A skilled horseman, he has undertaken long- distance equine trips on five continents, most recently guiding a 900-kilometer ride across Patagonia. Whether by kayak, on horseback or on foot, Winn advocates traveling spontane- ously and stopping to smell the roses (“The Slow Adventure,” page 31).

VIRGINIA MARSHALL

Marshall slipped away from Adventure Kayak’s editorial desk to report on the second-annual Gales Storm Gathering on Lake Superior (“Face Your (Freshwater) Fears,” page 66). Often overlooked by ocean paddlers, the big lake didn’t disappoint as a rough water proving ground. “It was awesome to see top instructors from the west and east coasts and even Wales coaching in this part of the world,” says Marshall, “but it was even better to see them humbled by the lake.”
