Kathmandu is a logical starting place for a nine-day river expedition down the world-famous Sun Kosi River. Then get off the beaten path with the remote Karnali River. Prepare for 248 miles of technical class III–VI rapids that take two weeks to descend— through the upper section you’ll be met with virtually untouched jungle while the lower section is commercially rafted. Access the upper section of the Karnali from the town of Pohkara; from there it’s a 14-hour bus ride and short Nepalese bush flight to the put-in. We didn’t say it was easy.
