EVENT FREESTYLE KAYAKING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

More than 300 of the top freestyle competitors from around the world will descend into the heart of the Smoky Mountains near Bryson City, North Carolina, from September 2–8. The Freestyle Kayaking World Championship is a much larger spectacle than the World Cup, which it alternates years with. Thousands of spectators will take in the action and the party happening off river is guaranteed to be just as good as the tricks on the water. www.freestylekayaking2013.com.

EVENT GAULEY FEST S 1 8 15 22 FALLFALLFALLFALL FA

After 30 years, Gauley Fest has grown to be the biggest paddling festival in the world. Held on the third weekend of September near Summersville, West Virginia, there’s no shortage of bands, booths and booze, as well as lots of playtime on the river. The Upper Gauley is a solid class V run but it’s the take-out and Heart Attack Hill that might do you in. At $25 to attend for the entire weekend, it’s a deal worthy of a dirtbag lifestyle. www.americanwhitewater.org.

Each October whitewater enthusiasts flock to Moose Fest for New York’s premiere whitewater festival—it’s a party on and off the river. Favorite features of the Lower Moose include 40-foot slide Fowlersville Falls and 18-foot Auger’s Falls. Just as famous as the paddling is the mayhem we reported on in Rapid’s Spring 2012 issue (www.rapidmag.com/0060)—more than a few paddlers end up in hospital each year.
