Meanwhile, Raymond Floyd — author of “Liquid Lean: De- veloping Lean Culture in the Process Industries” — will speak at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 in the Houstex Theater. Floyd formerly worked as the senior vice president of Suncor Energy, Canada’s premier energy company operat- ing the largest oil sand production facility in the world. Prior to retiring in September 2012, Floyd was responsible for the mining, energy/utility, extraction, and upgrading of assets in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
During his 24 years with Exxon Mobil, Floyd led six dif- ferent businesses, including some of the world’s largest and most complex single sites as well as the world’s largest multi- site petrochemical group. Each business has been formally recognized by third-party reviewers as demonstrating perfor- mance that was the best in industry.
According to Floyd, successful operations are achieved when every employee frequently and autonomously practices the tools of operational excellence when working toward a common goal. The common term for this in industry is creat- ing a culture of engagement. All cultures, both industrial and social, consist of shared values and beliefs, supported by ap- propriate behavior and rituals. By communicating values and making a standard practice of appropriate rituals it is possible for business leaders to create a situational culture within your organization that engages people to support the success of your business.
