T HE TERM ÔBODY


augmentationÕ is no longer the sole domain for implants such as those for the breast or chin; a wide variety of implants ® some


custom made ® are now available on the market for buttock augmentation, calf augmentation, and even pec augmentation. And it doesnÕt end there, as fat grafting becomes an increasingly popular option among many physicians and patients.


Breast augmentation and implants The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) states that breast augmentation is one of the most common procedures performed by its members, and with this section of the market worth


an estimated €774 billion, it doesnÕ t look to have been affected by any knocks to the industry over the past few years. Augmentation in this


area is generally designed to increase the size of the breast ® usually for those women who have small or under-developed breasts. However, the technique has also proved successful with regard to post-mastectomy reconstruction. The size and type of breast implant


are constantly improving and being refined, increasing both the safety and reliability of the procedure.

fillers remain the gold standard and first option for many patients and physicians, permanent implants are becoming more appealing in this area of aesthetic medicine. Multiple shapes and sizes are available, and can be placed either through the mouth, with a small incision at the gum line, or through a lower eyelid incision (but usually only if eyelid rejuvenation is being performed at the same time. Cheek implants are usually made of silicone or other non-reactive materials, and are placed in a pocket directly over the cheekbone.
