Dear Gardening Partner:
Winter/Spring 2013
Nothing is truer to itself than a garden – it answers only to the sun and the rain and your loving care. Ultimately it will bloom for the glory of itself, even if there is no one there to admire it. We can learn from our gardens...we can strive for the best, even if there is no one there to praise us for it. We are proud to say we strive for the best and trust it will serve you well.
A good customer of ours once said that Shumway’s catalog is “like seeing an old friend suddenly show up at your door…a constant surprise and a familiar face.” We hope this “old friend” brings you the contentment of a favorite companion, with just enough “surprises” that you will warmly welcome into your next garden.
In our search for things both old and new, we realize that it can be easy to notice the things that are overwhelmingly beautiful or large, such as our new Mr. & Mrs. Wrinkles (Back Cover) – two big, beautiful, wrinkled
pumpkins....and it’s just as easy to overlook the fragile perfection of a tiny bloom with understated beauty, such as our new Salvia Summer Jewel Pink (page 57), a 2012 AAS Winner. Large or small, we’ve tried to honor it all on the pages of this new catalog.

GARDEN GEMS TESTED AND PROVEN
04052 GEORGIA RATTLESNAKE WATERMELON. Yes, this is the original – the very best tasting watermelon ever, and has been diffi cult to fi nd seeds for until now! Light green fruits on moderately productive vines have darker “tiger” stripes and weigh an average of 30 to 40 lbs. apiece. The fl esh is pink, with dark brown seeds. Don’t settle for imitations ... this is the original, unequalled for its fi ne fl avor. 90 days. (A) Pkt. (20 seeds) $2.20;
2 pkts. $3.95; (K) 1/2 oz. $4.95.
CANDY ONION – SEEDS & PLANTS. It’s truly revolutionary! Forget everything you ever knew about onions. Unlike its short day and long day cousins, Candy onion will grow al- most anywhere in the U.S. Produces perfect, mild onions with sweet fl avor. They can get as big as softballs, with attractive yellow skins and savory white fl esh. This is a newer type of onion, and is the most widely adapted variety we know. Keeps well and matures in just 85 days.
02722 Seed. (A) Pkt. $2.45; 2 pkts. $4.35.
04525 Plants. 1 bunch (50 to 75 plants) $9.95; 2 bunches $14.95; 5 bunches $29.95; 10 bunches $49.95.
COWHORN OKRA. A robust variety, no longer commercially available, which produces prolifi c amounts of 10 in., curved pods on tall plants. Pods are ribbed with light green, and most tender up to 6 in. long. Very productive. 55-60 days. (A) Pkt. (50 seeds) $2.00; 2 pkts. $3.75; 4 pkts. $6.88.
00372 INDIGO ROSE TOMATO. The fi rst high anthocy- anin (a naturally occurring pigment that has been shown to fi ght disease in humans) tomato and said to be the healthiest tomato in the world. The high amount of anthocyanin creates quite a vibrant indigo on 2 in., round fruits. The purple coloring occurs on the portion of the fruit that is exposed to light, while the shaded portion starts out green and turns deep red when mature. Inside, the fl esh reveals the same red tone with a superbly balanced, multi- faceted tomato fl avor. Allow fruits to mature completely for best fl avor. Bred at OSU. Heavy yielder. 75-80 days. Indetermi- nate. (A) Pkt. (30 seeds) $2.95; 2 pkts. $5.25; 4 pkts. $9.45.
YUKON GOLD POTATO. Many say this is the best eating potato ever. You’ll likely agree. Golden inside and out, the skin is smooth and shallow-eyed. These tubers are quite sprout resistant, and excellent for storage. Widely ac- claimed as the star of European golden fl eshed potatoes, and renowned for its outstanding fl avor, Shumway is pleased to offer Yukon Gold to our loyal customers. Great baker, and beautiful when mashed. Early maturing, 75–85 days.

See page 28 for shipping restrictions.
00001 GOLIATH VFFNTASt TOMATO. Very simply the best hybrid tomato on the market today. Beau- tiful, smooth, bright red, deep oblate fruits, 10 to 15 oz., with a sweet luscious fl avor and almost completely blemish free exterior. Tall, vigorous, high yielding plants with modern disease resistance are widely adaptable to the North, South, and just about everywhere in between. Indeterminate. 65 days. (A) Pkt. (30 seeds) $2.85; 2 pkts. $4.95; (D) 1/32 oz. $10.50; (H) 1/8 oz. $37.95.
01340 IMPROVED DETROIT DARK RED
BEET. The leading main-crop beet for both home and market gardens. Beets are globe- shaped with deep red color inside and out. Indistinct zoning. Flesh is tender, fi ne-grained and sweet. Tops make excellent boiling greens. Sow at two week intervals. The ideal all-purpose beet. 60 days. (A) Pkt. $1.95; (L) 1 oz. $4.95; (M) 1/4 lb. $7.95.
02334 SPINNING GOURD. Also known as Dancing Gourd. Possibly the smallest gourd available when fully mature – these little cuties only grow to 2 in. long. Many years ago, children would take them to school and spin them on their desks like a top. Bot- tle-shaped, with shiny dark green skin, striped with white. Very hard shelled when dried (will turn tan in color). Plants have long vines that are very productive. Great for crafts and fall decora- tions. 90-100 days. (A) Pkt. (50 seeds) $2.45; (L) 1 oz. $13.95.
