Heartland FSC Heartland FSC received full-member sta-
tus in May from U.S. Figure Skating. Te club works with Centerpoint Community Ice in In- dependence, Mo., where it grew by 70 percent after its first year. Te rink, which opened in the fall of 2009, met a need in the community, as the Basic Skills program quadrupled in size in a year’s time. HFSC saw the need for activities that would meet the needs of all ages of begin- ning skaters and began a synchronized skating program that has grown from one team to four teams. HFSC also provides seminars and clinics, bringing in PSA master-rated coaches to help train skaters, as well as provide continuing edu- cation for area coaches. HFSC also supports and promotes its adult skaters.

lessons, a great artistic skating program, as well as synchronized skating teams. We hold an an- nual Basic Skills competition, test sessions, ex- hibitions and an ice show. To participate in the exhibitions or to have a highlighted feature in the ice show, a club membership is required. We offer a reduced club ice rate to SLFSC members. Our synchronized skating program, developed in the 2009–10 season with a beginner 2 team, has been the greatest contribution to our club’s success and retention of members. Te program was started using 45 minutes of virtually unused club ice time. Last season was our third season of having a synchronized skating program and we increased from one team to three. Synchronized skating makes the skaters feel part of a team; they now have a friend out on the ice and other club ice time quickly fills as skaters now want to be at the rink with their friends.
