59979 RIP VAN WINKLE, THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW AND OTHER STORIES

by Washington Irving Rip van Winkle is an amiable man whose home and farm suffer from his lazy neglect; a familiar figure about the village, he is loved by all except his wife. One autumn day he escapes her nagging to wander up into the mountains and there, after drinking

some liquor offered to him by a band of very strange folk, he settles down under a shady tree and falls asleep. He wakes up 20 years later and returns to his village to find that not only is his wife dead but war and revolution have changed many things. ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’ tells of conscientious schoolmaster Ichabod Crane. Orderly and strict in school, out of school his life is disorderly and his head full of fearful fantasies. The Spectre Bridegroom, The Pride of the Village and Mountjoy, complete this collection of classic tales. 172 page paperback. ONLY £2

23879 THE WOODLANDERS by Thomas Hardy

Educated beyond her station, Grace Melbury returns to the woodland village of little Hintock and cannot marry her intended, Giles Winterborne. Her alternative choice proves disastrous, and in a moving tale that has vibrant characters, many humorous moments and genuine pathos coupled with tragic irony, Hardy eschews a happy ending. With characteristic derision, he exposes the cruel indifference of the archaic legal system off his day, and shows the tragic consequences of untimely adherence to futile social and religious proprieties. 320pp Paperback. ONLY £2

23871 TOM SAWYER AND HUCKLEBERRY FINN by Mark Twain

Tom Sawyer, a shrewd and adventurous boy, is as much at home in the respectable world of his Aunt Polly as in the self-reliant and parentless world of his friend Huck Finn. The two enjoy a series of adventures, accidentally witnessing a murder, establishing the innocence of the man wrongly accused, as well as being hunted by Injun Joe,

the true murderer, eventually escaping and finding the treasure that Joe had buried. Huckleberry Finn recounts the further adventures of Huck, who runs away from a drunken and brutal father, and meets up with the escaped slave Jim. They float down the Mississippi on a raft, participating in the lives of the characters they meet, witnessing corruption, moral decay and intellectual impoverishment. 208pp Paperback ONLY £2

71138 MRS SIMPSON

by Charles Higham 'She had more beaux than any other girl in Baltimore.' The romance of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor has been called the greatest love story of the 20th century. On publication in 1988, the author used explosive Secret Intelligence files to reveal a darker side to their 40 year relationship. Now he has updated his international bestseller. Although

Wallis gained control of the monarch with sexual techniques learned in China, she risked losing her power through a reckless and sustained affair with William Bullitt, the wealthy US Ambassador to France, with whom she conspired against Britain in the interest of Hitler. The book shows for the first time how Wallis and the King, later the Duke of Windsor, were almost destroyed in a blackmail plot in Paris that could have exposed their dangerous and treasonable association. Newly released FBI files demonstrate the extent of the Duchess's espionage activities and provide a wealth of information about the government, the royal family and the Secret Intelligence Service. 557pp in paperback with 16 pages of b/w photos. £8.99 NOW £4

71128 A FIELD FULL OF BUTTERFLIES: Seven CDs

by Rosemary Penfold An enchanting story of a lost world. Rosemary Penfold was born in 1938 in a traditional gypsy wagon and grew up in the fields of the English countryside. She recounts her life with a loving extended

family in a small but close knit community. From early memories of her father bringing home oranges during the war to the simple beauty of a field full of butterflies on a hot summer's day, Rosemary's elegant narrative captures the love and losses, hopes and struggles, traditions and prejudices that bound her to her family and help her adapt to a fast-changing world. Running time eight hours 50 minutes, unabridged, on seven CDs. £20 NOW £6

71516 THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA POP-UP by C. S. Lewis

Based on C. S. Lewis's classic Narnia books, the story literally springs to life in the hands of award-winning paper engineer Robert Sabuda. Each of the seven books in the series has its own pop- up spread rendered in spectacular detail, the first of which is the Great

Lion Aslan who terrifyingly reaches forward from the pages. The White Witch rules, making it always winter but never Christmas in 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'. Inside a glittering, icy world, you can even lift the flap to open the wardrobe. In a colour action scene, complete with rope reins, 'Prince Caspian' is victorious in his pop-up scene. 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader' pops up complete with golden dragon's head, rope rigging and a real material sail and so we go on, in scene after incredible scene. In fact these pages are so delicately

engineered, they may be safer in the hands of adult collectors! Suit ages five to adult.

Postgate's creations Bagpuss, The Clangers, Ivor the Engine and Noggin the Nog, have made him one of the most endearing children's storytellers of the last 100 years. Oliver Postgate describes how he came to create his stories and characters, developing innovative techniques alongside his friend and co-producer Peter Firmin. Amazingly, almost all of Oliver's films were made in a cowshed in Kent on a budget of next to nothing. But the path to filmmaking was far from conventional or even planned. Before his first TV production Alexander the Mouse in 1958, he had already been a war evacuee, conscientious objector, farm labourer, a relief worker in post-war Germany, an artist, actor and inventor. Read his extraordinary and adventurous life, both real and imagined, charmingly and beautifully told. 425pp with 16 pages of colour and black and white photos and line art.

A ravishingly beautiful book filled with colourful gothic style, medieval illuminated depictions from the Bible, as well as fairytale castles, angels and animals. Created in the early 15th century, this Book of Hours was commissioned by the Duc de

63270 100 POSTERS OF PAUL COLIN by Jack Rennert

Paul Colin was born in Nancy, France, in 1892 and became an apprentice in the printing plant of Barbier. In 1910 he founded a magazine 'La Vache Enragée' and the poster he did for this journal appears for the very first time in this rare book. It is a 1977 first edition

outsize paperback measuring 11" x 16" of 112 pages. This is poster art at its very finest, advertising dramas, ballet, Parisian casinos, musical recordings, French resistance and, of course, the first poster for the Revue Nègre at the Champs-Elysées which launched his career. 71539 VISHNU'S CROWDED TEMPLE: India Since the Great Rebellion by Maria Misra

The Western view of India depicts a sophisticated technological culture held back by entrenched attitudes deriving from both the caste system and from colonial attitudes imported by the British Raj. For some historians, a free market should inevitably lead to social freedoms

while for others, Indians themselves have colluded in elitism. The author gives a different view in this comprehensive study. For Indians, democracy is a mechanism for furthering group advantage, not for pursuing ideological or individual interests, and as a result there can be political partnerships between very diverse groups. When the British became dominant in India its society was in fact very fluid, and the view of a rigidly hierarchical caste system was sold to the British by Brahman elites anxious to perpetuate their own power, although it only existed in the northern Gangetic region. Elsewhere power arose from land control and military dominance. The author covers the British Raj before World War I, the inter-war years when the imperial system came under question, and the final section tells the story of the Nehruvian and Hindu nationalist projects to create a more integrated India. Partition resulted in one of the great mass migrations in history, accompanied by horrifying brutality as officials failed to consider the extent of the administrative and security operation. The book concludes with the significant contemporary displacement of Vishnu by the popular shape-changing monkey-god Hanuman. 536pp, glossary, maps, b/w illus. Paperback.
