Lopez Lomong won’t soon forget where he came from. His story was made famous in 2008 when he was deservingly chosen as
the Team USA flag bearer at the Beijing Olympic Games.
Many Olympic team members spent the ages of
six to 16 developing their abilities in the sport and working their way up through youth, junior high and high school programs. But for Lomong, after escaping a Sudanese rebel soldier camp and fleeing to Kenya, he spent the next 10 years living in a refugee camp and receiving one meal per day. But his life
changed forever when he was brought to the United States at age 16 as one of the “Lost Boys of Sudan.”
He is now a two-time Olympian on the World’s #1 Track & Field team.
A top priority for Lomong is giving back and helping those in his native country avoid the circumstances he was forced to overcome. It was for these reasons he developed the Lopez Lomong Foundation and works in partnership with 4 South Sudan,
whose mission is to help those in the South Sudan attain water, healthcare, education and nutrition.
His motivations both on the track and through his foundation are clearly defined and have helped him become a true humanitarian.
