On a bright spring day, officials, students, and community mem- bers gathered to dedicate the new playground at P.S. 181 in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. Across New York many neighborhoods lack sufficient recreational space. With support from its donors—and recently in partnership with Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s PlaNYC 2030—The Trust for Public Land has converted more than 50 asphalt schoolyards into modern school playgrounds that may feature, like the one at P.S. 181, a running track, a turf playing field, gaming tables, an amphitheater, and outdoor classrooms, along with trees and gardens. Students help plan the playgrounds, and nonprofit community partners provide on- going programming and steward- ship and keep them open for the community after school hours.
