IN MEMORIAM Robert T. Gannett


Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1917, Robert T. Gannett of Brattleboro dies Au- gust 26, 2012. A direct descendant of Brat- tleboro’s namesake, General William Brat- tle, Gannett graduated from Harvard Col- lege in 1939 and entered Harvard Law School that fall. After a stint in the Unit- ed States Army during World War II, Gan- nett came to Brattleboro to practice law in 1946, originally serving in the office of Os- mer C. Fitts. He became a member of the Vermont bar in 1947 and in 1950 formed a law partnership with James L. Oakes. Gan- nett conducted an active tax and estate practice, partnering with both Bruce We- ber and Kenneth Fisher and later as a sole practitioner. He was elected to the Ver- mont House of Representatives in 1953. In 1960 he ran unsuccessfully for the United States House of Representatives and sub- sequently returned to law practice in Brat- tleboro. In 1972 he was elected to the first of ten consecutive terms in the Vermont Senate. He was involved in numerous com- munity and state organizations and com- mittees, as well as many foundations and service groups throughout the state. He is survived by three daughters and a son and their spouses, nine grandchildren, a sister, a brother, and twenty nieces and nephews.


------------------------------------ Chester Sawyer Ketchum


Born in Salisbury, Vermont, on Decem- ber 6, 1927, Chester Sawyer Ketchum, 84, died September 26, 2012 in Middle- bury. He served in the United States Navy from 1945 until 1947. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1951 and from Yale Law School in 1954. He served as the third law clerk for the Honorable Ernest W. Gibson in the United States District Court. He practiced law in Waterbury, Burlington, and Middlebury. He was also appointed deputy attorney general during the legis- lative reapportionment in the early 1960s. In 1974 he was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives and served three terms. He was elected to the Vermont Sen- ate in 1986. In 1990, he was elected Addi- son County probate judge and served until his retirement in 1999. Ketcham served as president of the Vermont Bar Association in 1980-81. He took an active leadership role in many other organizations and asso- ciation around the state. He is survived by


his daughter and her husband, a grandson, a granddaughter, and three step-children.


------------------------------------ Althea Przybylo Kroger


Born in Chicago on October 9, 1946, Althea Przybylo Kroger, 65, of Burling- ton died August 30, 2012. She earned her bachelor’s degree from St. Louis University in 1969, an M.A. in political science from the University of Vermont in 1985, her law degree from Vermont Law School in 1988, an M.P.A. in public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and most recently, a certificate in teaching English as a sec- ond language from International House in Krakow, Poland. Ms. Kroger came to Ver- mont in 1972 with her husband, Joseph, a professor at St. Michael’s College. She be- came active in local politics in Essex and was elected to the Vermont House of Rep- resentatives for four terms. She was elect- ed to the Vermont Senate in 1990, serving two terms. In 1995, she was elected assis- tant judge and served as family court judge and Chittenden County administrator. Dur- ing her time in the legislature, she orga- nized and coordinated the successful effort to pass an amendment to rewrite the Ver- mont State Constitution in gender-neutral language. She is survived by her husband, a son and daughter-in-law, two grand- daughters, three sisters, two brothers, and numerous nieces and nephews.


------------------------------------ John A. Rocray


Born in 1932, John A. Rocray of Brat-


tleboro died August 18, 2012. He gradu- ated from Dartmouth College and earned his law degree from Cornell University Law School. In 1957 he joined the Brattleboro law firm of Fitts and Olsen. During his fifty- five year career, he served as state’s attor- ney for twelve years and had his own law firm until his retirement in 2012. He was a long-time member of the Vermont Bar As- sociation. He is survived by a daughter, a former wife, two brothers and their wives, and numerous cousins, nieces, and neph- ews.
