Nando’s, the chicken restaurant chain, is eating into its energy consumption by challenging the behaviour of its staff. Carina Bailey reports

ando’s has come a long way from its flame-grilled beginnings in Johannesburg, where the very first Nando’s-branded restaurant


was opened in 1987. Some 25 years and 265 restaurants later, the fiery peri peri chicken chain has embarked on a rapid expansion plan and, driven by its ethos of ‘together, we’ll do the right thing’, the fi rm has reduced annual carbon emissions by 2% over the last financial year,


despite opening 25 outlets in the same period. After Nandos encouraged managers to


think green, they threw down the energy effi ciency gauntlet themselves, challenging each other to outdo their best operational performances, after half-hourly energy monitoring enabled the company to identify who was on shift. Energy manager Julie Allen has seen real reductions in the energy consumption of individual outlets, which has led, collectively, to carbon dioxide emissions dropping from
